MIOSM!

March is Music In Our Schools Month (MIOSM)! In celebration of MIOSM, Lake students have been talking about why music matters. Here are some of the reasons that we think the study of music is important...

For more information about the importance of music education, check out the resources on the Childrens Music Workshop site or you can call me at the school and I would love to share all the reasons why music matters! Happy MIOSM!

Candy Bar Rhythms

2nd Graders can use words to make rhythms! In this activity, each student got to pick a candy bar name and they used ta's, ti-ti's, ta-a's and shh's (quarter notes, pairs of eighth notes, half notes and quarter rests) to make a rhythm for their candy bar.

For example:

"Hershey Bar" could be "Ti-Ti, Ta."

After each student wrote their own rhythms, they combined theirs with their groups to make a composition. Then, they sight-read and clapped their new rhythms together. They found out that mixing up the index cards makes a whole new composition!

Here are the students writing out their rhythms:

Here they are practicing with their groups:

Nice work, 2nd grade!
